It all started with the idea of horns.
The first Baby Dragon already had the horns. And at first the horns were plastic. The main advantage of plastic is its lightness, which does not need to be additionally compensated for by making it heavier. And I still use plastic horns … But not every style is suitable for them.

With the suede horns that I sew myself, there is much more room in the selection of colors. But suede is matte and has its own shape limitations.

Czech beads seem to be the solution. For a crest and a hide, they are really ideal. But they are rather short.

I was ready to come to terms with imperfection … And while I was sad about it, I looked at the photographs of the works of glass artists. Beads in the shape of berries, leaves, flowers … Maybe horns too?

At my own peril and risk, I wrote to Alyona Davydova, from whom I already bought gifts for myself and my friends. It was a bit impudent to offer your bead concept to an experienced bead maker. But I had to at least ask!

…It was a year ago. The other day I ordered her a new batch of horns. The old ones, by the way, are not all used up yet – and are waiting in the wings. The fact is that I do not order specific colors, but give only general recommendations for size and shape. And then I pick up the fabric and other materials. Close to what the fashion world calls collaboration. After all, Alyona Davydova creates not just “details” – but rather begins making a Baby Dragon, and I finish.

Before I started making Baby Dragons, I made four Asian dragons, very large – about a meter each. One now lives in Moscow with a new mistress, and three are decorating my room, working as a constant reminder that I did such things, and I didn’t like it. Because it’s too long and boring.

Actually, when we discussed this order, nothing prevented me from making another Baby Dragon, but in Haku colors, especially since I had Haku colors in the corresponding materials. And the customer agreed … But then I fell seriously ill, and spent a month with a fever. I felt so bad that I didn’t want to sew. This despite the fact that I started sewing literally the next day after resuscitation! At some point, I got scared that I would never want to sew Baby Dragons. And when I recovered and wanted again, I still remembered that fear.

Asian dragons are not my topic. But I needed to test myself that I could: I could build a pattern, I could work in new techniques.

Hayao-hime is not a Baby Dragon after all. But let it be.

Perhaps the last of the renew Baby Dragon, but I will not guess. I have been planning to give Mervena a new look for a long time. And I did it only when the terrible time of dry grass came. Despite the luxurious look, she feels better only on dryness ready to break out.

Project “One Hundred Baby Dragons Later” could be called “The Second Approach to the Projectile”, and the fourth issue was the so-called “Gzhel” – in fact, the “blue pattern on white” style, which has many varieties. Therefore, in a pair to the Gzhelina made at the beginning of 2015, two Baby Dragons turned out at once: Jiey Farfor and Henny Farfor. So in the near future I will not want to do these colors… Probably.

Project “A hundred Baby Dragons later” is needed to evaluate the development of my skills and new opportunities for dragon making. The first issue was about the very first – watermelon-like – Baby Dragon, with preserving not only the plot, but also the fabric. The second one was only with story about golden autumn. For the third time, a fabric from the same collection and with the same pattern was used, but in a different color scheme and with different materials.

They may be sisters, but Harmony is very different from Damascus, and in everything: from the cut and the choice of skin pattern to the possibilities that new types of horns and thorns give. The shape of the wings, the frame, the eyes, and even more so the shape of the head and body – everything has changed.

But, of course, I still have room to grow!
